6 Guidelines for Healthy Political Conversations

The following Action provides guidelines to facilitate positive and respectful conversations about politics and controversial issues.

6 Guidelines for Healthy Political Conversations:

  1. R-E-S-P-E-C-T. The most important goal in a discussion on controversial topics should be to ensure that everyone involved feels respected, valued, and heard.

  2. Get Your Priorities Straight. The goal of the conversation should be to learn all that you can, not to prove your points or “win”.

  3. Show genuine interest in others perspectives. Make sure to listen carefully when others speak. One way to create a space for positive conversation is to repeat back others beliefs and statements in your own words.

  4. Seek common ground or abort mission peacefully. If a disagreement arises, try to seek common ground that can further the discussion, but recognize when to back off peacefully and agree to disagree.

  5. Know your stuff. Before entering into a discussion surrounding controversial subjects, do some research. A few credible sources:
    1. BBC News
    2. Al Jazeera
    3. United Nations News Centre

  6. Ask questions! Asking questions and admitting when you don’t know something helps create a comfortable space that usually leads to hearty discussion. It’s impossible to know everything, and remember that you’re not always right!
