5 Steps Toward Self-Love

Discover ways to overcome the destructive force of shame by replacing harmful habits with self-love and care.

  1. Look back on your life and try to find the source of your shame. Discuss this with a loved one or journal about it in an attempt to review it from the perspective of an adult. How does this help you reshape your experience?

  2. Begin paying attention to things that trigger feelings of shame. The more we are self-aware of what causes such feelings, the better equipped we are to manage and understand our pain.

  3. Exercise self-compassion. Though this practice may not feel natural, strive to treat yourself with the same love and grace that you would a dear friend or family member. Self-compassion results in the releasing of oxytocin, which is the hormone known to increase feelings of safety, calmness, emotional stability, and trust.

  4. Challenge negative thoughts. Memorize a few short phrases or even verses from your respective religious text to combat destructive thoughts immediately when they arise. Speaking positive truths to yourself can help refocus your mindset and free you from spiraling downward.

  5. Discover more on your own through research. The following Fresh Air books from The Upper Room compiled and introduced by Amy Lyles Wilson are great resources for working through things like Compassion, Forgiveness, Anger and Hope.
