Reflection Questions and Discussion Topics

  • One of Jeannie Alexander's suggestions to address mass incarceration is to start models of restorative justice within the church. If you are a part of a church community, how can you create models of justice that Alexander is suggesting? What would it look like to think of justice in a new way?

  • Alexander also talks about justice circles - what do you think a justice circle looks like? How can you create justice circles?

  • Did you know about voting restrictions for convicted felons? If not, you can learn more here.

  • If people who are imprisoned and many on probation cannot vote, how can we exercise our political voice in the best way to support their needs?

  • What are some arguments you would use to tell others about the problems with our justice system and to show them that the U.S. has a mass incarceration problem?

  • Alexander talks about how imprisonment affects communities and families - what kind of models of justice would serve families and communities in better ways?

Take Action

Action Items: Mass Incarceration

How do we address mass incarceration in the U.S.? These action items offer some ways and suggestions to get involved.

In the Encounter video, Jeannie Alexander offers some suggestions on how to address mass incarceration in our communities.

She says you can get involved with restorative justice organizations:

  1. Children's Defense Fund
  2. Restorative Justice (A part of the Centre for Justice & Reconciliation)
  3. No Exceptions Prison Collective
  4. Find an organization that you can work with in your community

She also talks about using your political voice responsibly:

Educate others:

  • Start a "justice circle" or a book club that focuses on mass incarceration
  • Try suggesting new models of justice in places that you have influence like your home or church
  • Share on social media the facts about the mass incarceration problem in the U.S.

Together, we can begin to address mass incarceration.
