Stay Awake and Eat

Use this poem to center yourself in the words that Tallu spoke in her video about commonality and the common good. Reflect on the ways in which our own stories have been separated from others and how we might bring those stories together again.

Where did we get the idea that we are in this world alone?

In a time where society is a hodgepodge of separate identities

Where was the moment in time where we said, “I only need myself?”

Colors of all shades and sizes of all shapes and dynamic

Where is the thread that connects us all together?

The food that keeps us all going – broken down the same in each body

Broken down into particles that are exactly the same

Keeping us alive, keeping us upright, keeping us awake

Forks and spoons and knives and hands

Feeding us the same ways, each of us the same way

The commonality of who we are as humanity is lost

Dropped onto the floor for the dogs to eat

The commonality of the created wonder that we are – the wonder that is good.

It is dropped. It has missed our mouths. Fallen onto the napkins in our laps – thrown away.

How can we find it again? That common good.

Is it through the selfish deeds we accomplish?

Is it through the breaking of the intertwined strands that bind us?

How may we find the image of the God who is good within each other?

We say this to you, “Stay awake dear friends – eat and stay awake.”

Look at those who are around you for they are the faces of God.

Stay awake holy ones – eat and stay awake.

Find the common good for it is the only way we may move forward.

Stay awake and eat.
