UMC General Conference: Bishop Ivan Abrahams

Posted May 18, 2016

The United Methodist General Conference is happening in Portand, Oregon from May 10-20, 2016. During morning worship on May 17th at General Conference, Bishop Ivan Abrahams, member of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa and General Secretary of the World Methodist Council, preached a sermon that emphasized the people on the margins. Bishop Abrahams asked, "How often do I hear people say that the poor need to pull themselves up by their own bootstrings? How cruel is that because people understand reality? Most of the poor don't have shoes." Like this statement, Bishop Abrahams challenged those in attendance, urging conference attendees and the United Methodist Church to be the a church of "the least of these," not a church of the status quo.

Bishop Abrahams'  message was a beautiful call to live out the gospel of Jesus of Nazareth. Below is a video from the morning worship from the General Conference. The video will begin at Bishop Abrahams' sermon and the sermon ends at 43 minutes.
